In the Iron chef project we learn the science behind cooking and learn that it's not as simple as it looks. The goal for our project was to learn how to cook random ingredients, using nothing but the knowledge that we learned of throughout the course of this project and have it be judged. After learning what our mystery ingredient we had two whole hours with no technology to come up with a recipe to use for the day we'll have the competition. After making a recipe for our dish we were given a day to cook a prototype of what our food was going to look like on exhibition day. We also had to describe our food using the science we learn throughout the project on a poster with our cooking. My group and I were given green apples, green onions, chicken thighs, hash browns and provolone cheese. We made the hash browns into breading for the chicken thighs and we sautéed the apples and onions and bedded them on top of rice and lastly covered everything in the provolone cheese. This taught me how to cook since I never really knew much about cooking until this project and made me learn about the science behind what we cook.
This is my Modernist cuisine poster, in which my group and I explain the science that is happening in our dish. This includes things such as why rice inflates while on hot water or the maillard reaction which is when meats turn brown. The picture in the middle is our dish when we first cooked our dish next to some of our ingredients that we used.
This is the video we made to show the judges what food we cooked and how we made it. As you can see we took many steps but that was because we had no idea how to make but the second we cooked this it went a lot more smoother since we learned from our mistakes that we made while filming this. Some of the mistakes we made were things such as how we cooked the hash browns more clustered making it hard to cook.
Reflection
In this project I learned many things such as why certain things happen when cooking but the biggest take away was cooking itself it was a fun and a crazy experience. Not only did I cooked my hash brown chicken thighs but for one of the jobs I cooked an octopus and turned it into a stew. If I would do this project again I would changed what we do with the mysterious ingredient into something different, what would it be, I don't know but I'm sure it won't be as great as the dish we made. The proudest moment I had was right before we went to the judges because it made me realize how much effort and how well our food turn out.
