The Model United Nations (MUN) is a a project in which we talk about world problems while representing a country that is part of the MUN. The United Nation is an organization that the countries of the world unite to talk about problems in a peaceful manner. For our MUN I had to portray The People's Republic of China and was in the committee of United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.
In order to get a better understanding of my nation I read a bunch of articles relating to my country and their perspective for the refugee crisis. The article that was the most useful for me was China: Refugees Forcibly Returned to Burma. This article basically talked about how much China doesn't want any refugees in their nation and are willing to forcefully return refugees back to their country. This was helpful to me because it gave me a very clear understanding that China does not want anything to do with refugees. I found this article while doing research on the Myanmar civil war and how China is related to it. I was really shocked about how China treats refugees escaping from war.

After getting a better understanding of my nation my class and I started making our position paper. The position paper sounds and is self explanatory, we give our country's point of view for the debate. The position paper required us to give our opinion and give stats and facts that will help make our argument more convincing to the other delegates. We made three different drafts of our position paper and in each one we got critiqued in each draft. In my first draft I was given the advice to add more in my middle draft and to take out information that China wouldn't care about. In my second draft I got the idea to make my statement on what the UN does more kind sounding and detailed. My final draft I was given the ironic news that my whole paragraph about Myanmar was really incorrect and should be changed. This helped me the most since I would've had a very inaccurate paper. My proudest part of the paper was the part in which I said how the European Union had 10,000 missing children and they have done nothing about it. That piece came very handy to me for the actual conference and made the EU sound bad.
The most important moment during the MUN is the opening speech. The opening speech is the speech in which we give our country perspective and what we want to do for the rest of the conference. The biggest difference between my first draft to final draft was the small grammar mistakes and my wording of sentences. The most important feedback I got was from two people telling me how I spoke was way to fast and that I should slow down and put more emphasis on certain words. If I were to change it I would add more information that will help my point. I'm saying this because everyone else had information about the topic.
The conference was really fun and enjoyed how we all debated during the project. The proudest moments I had was when I called out the European Union for the 10,000 missing refugee children that are all over Europe. The reason I was proud was because I was the only one with a second opening speech and the fact I made the all of the EU to be quiet for a good 5-10 minutes. What I was proud of achieving in my committee was how a vast majority agreed with my statements and proved how good I was as a speaker. If I would do something different in my committee it would be the fact that the EU completely ignored my statement and force them to talk about it more. I believe I should of done this because it was brought up twice and was simply ignored but mostly because it is a important thing to discuss since the UNICEF is about children safety. If anybody from 9th grade that would doing this project next year need a word of advice I would tell them to do research about your country and your countries enemies. The reason being is if someone would start to make you take blame you can simply do the same to them. My other advice would be to start thinking like your country since that way you would get a natural sound to your opinions.
